Degrees and percent grade describe the same hill differently
A slope can be expressed as an angle in degrees or as percent grade. The values are related, but they are not interchangeable. Degrees measure the angle above horizontal. Percent grade compares vertical rise with horizontal run. A 45-degree slope has a 100% grade; a 45% grade is only about 24 degrees.
This distinction matters because mower manuals, construction plans and service providers may use different units. Converting the number incorrectly can place equipment on terrain much steeper than intended.
Method 1: level, straightedge and tape measure
- Select a representative line. Measure in the direction of steepest descent, not diagonally across the hill.
- Establish a horizontal run. Place a straight board with a level on top, or stretch a line and confirm that it is level.
- Measure the run. Record the horizontal distance—not the length lying on the surface.
- Measure the rise. At the downhill end, measure vertically from the level board or string to the ground.
- Calculate percent grade. Divide rise by run and multiply by 100.
- Repeat. Check the crest, middle, toe, turns and side-sloping sections because an average can hide a short, steeper segment.
Example: if the ground drops 3 feet over a 12-foot horizontal run, 3 ÷ 12 × 100 equals a 25% grade. That is approximately 14 degrees.
Method 2: a clinometer or inclinometer
A clinometer measures an angle relative to horizontal. Some are dedicated tools; others attach to equipment. OSHA recommends using a slope indicator when an angle must be determined for riding-mower assessment.
Use the device according to its instructions and take several readings. A phone application may be helpful for screening, but case shape, calibration and how the phone is held can affect the result. Do not use a reading as permission to exceed equipment limits or enter unsafe terrain.
Converting percent grade and degrees
Percent grade is calculated with this formula:
To convert a decimal grade to degrees, use the arctangent: degrees = arctan(rise ÷ run). To convert degrees to percent grade, use the tangent of the angle and multiply by 100. A construction calculator, spreadsheet or scientific calculator can perform these functions.

Values are rounded for planning. A short depression, rut or steeper crest may control the equipment decision even when the measured average is lower.
Why surface length is not horizontal run
If you lay a tape directly along the grass, that measurement follows the hypotenuse of the slope. Using it as “run” understates the percent grade. The run in the formula must be horizontal. The rise must be vertical. Keeping those two measurements at right angles is what makes the calculation meaningful.
Measure more than the main face
A mowing route includes access, staging, turns and runout. Record the steepest segment and note:
- Changes near the crest or bottom.
- Side slopes that angle across the intended path.
- Wet spots, erosion channels and loose soil.
- Ponds, creeks, walls, culverts and unprotected edges.
- Fences, gates and the width needed to enter.
- Rocks, stumps, utility structures and hidden holes.
- Space for the operator to maintain visibility and safe distance.
Photos should include a wide view from safe ground, views across and along the slope, a scale reference and closeups of access points. Photos alone flatten terrain, so pair them with measurements and a property address.
Compare the result with the exact equipment manual
Never compare your percent-grade measurement with a manual’s degree limit without converting it. Then read the rest of the slope instructions: equipment configuration, travel direction, attachments, turns, wet-surface restrictions and rollover protection can all be as important as the stated maximum.

Use the measurement to choose a safer next step
If the slope approaches or exceeds conventional equipment limits, do not experiment. Review how steep is too steep for a riding mower and zero-turn mower considerations. A vegetation change, manual method from secure ground or professional slope-mowing evaluation may be more appropriate.

Is 100% grade vertical?
No. A 100% grade means equal rise and horizontal run, which is a 45-degree angle. A vertical face is 90 degrees and does not have a finite percent grade.
Can I measure from a photograph?
Photos can document context but usually distort or flatten grade. Use a physical measurement, survey data or a professional site evaluation.
Should I use the average slope?
Record the average for planning, but equipment selection should consider the steepest segment, turns, access and consequences of a slide.
