Residential Difficult Terrain

Can a Remote-Controlled Mower Reach a Fenced Backyard?

A machine must reach the slope without damaging access areas or becoming trapped; the full route matters from trailer to work zone.

The short answer

Possibly. The operator must verify gate opening, machine width, turning room, overhead and side clearance, surface capacity, steps, bridges, drainage crossings and a safe loading route. A gate that is nominally wide enough may still fail because of hinges, tight corners or soft approaches.

Safety note: Equipment ratings are maximum specifications, not a promise that every site at that grade or condition is suitable. The operator must follow the exact manual and evaluate terrain, moisture, obstacles, visibility and the consequences of losing control.

Measure the clear opening

Measure between the narrowest fixed points with the gate fully open, including hinges, latches and posts. Compare against the exact machine and attachment—not an approximate class size.

Follow the entire access route

Photograph turns, side yards, slopes, patios, retaining walls, steps and overhead obstructions. The route must work in both directions.

Check surface capacity

Septic areas, drain fields, irrigation, pavers, bridges and saturated lawns may not support the equipment. Property owners should identify buried or fragile features.

Plan loading and unloading

The trailer or transport vehicle needs a suitable legal position and a stable unloading area. Loading ramps have their own limits and must follow the manufacturer’s procedure.

Consider temporary access changes carefully

Fence-panel removal may be possible when the owner authorizes it and a qualified party performs the work, but it must be included in scope. ClearSlope should not be assumed to provide fence work.

Send access photos before the visit

Include a tape measure in the gate photo, views of every turn and the trailer parking area. Then request a ClearSlope site evaluation.

Frequently asked questions

What gate width is required?

It depends on the exact machine and attachment, plus clearance for safe passage and turns.

Can the mower go down steps?

Do not assume so. Steps and retaining edges may make access unsuitable.

Can it cross a small bridge?

Only if the bridge’s capacity and geometry are verified for the equipment; otherwise use another route.

Will tracks damage the side yard?

They can disturb turf, especially during turns or on soft ground. Access protection must be evaluated.
