The short answer
Tracks provide a broad contact area, continuous traction surface and compact turning capability. On a remote-controlled mower, those traits can support mobility on uneven or inclined ground and may reduce ground pressure compared with some wheeled machines. They do not eliminate sliding, rutting or rollover hazards.
Contact area and ground pressure
A machine’s weight divided across a larger contact patch can lower average ground pressure. That can be useful on turf and variable soil, but published figures are not a guarantee of zero disturbance. Soft pockets, sharp edges and concentrated loads still matter.
Traction is not the same as stability
Tracks may grip well while the machine is still outside a prudent operating envelope. Stability also depends on center of gravity, slope orientation, attachments, vegetation, soil movement and sudden control inputs.
Turning can shear turf
Skid-steering and pivot turns force one track to slide relative to the surface. On soft or delicate turf, that can tear vegetation. Professional operators favor gradual turns, reduce repeated passes and stop when the surface begins to deform.
Tracks on wet or loose ground
A tracked mower can still slide on saturated clay, loose fill, pine straw, dead vegetation or mud. If the track cannot develop reliable shear resistance, more contact area does not solve the underlying soil problem.
Inspection and maintenance
Track tension, condition, fasteners and debris buildup affect performance. The operator follows the exact manual, inspects before use and shuts the machine down before clearing wrapped material.
